If you are looking for a convenient and affordable homeschool computer for your kids, I highly recommend using a Chromebook. It offers a lot of perks over traditional laptops.
When it comes to battery backup, for instance, a Chrome Book can last up to 10 hours on a single charge.
Another big advantage is that even the premium Chromebook is very affordable. You can easily find the best Chromebook for homeschooling for under $200. Apart from that, it offers fast connectivity, smooth and better touch HD display, automatic cloud storage, and most importantly, the securest device on the planet – making it the best student laptop even for online classes.
With easy-to-use Google apps, like Google Docs, you can have instant access to all the tools you need to help your kids excel in their studies. You can also find various educational games and apps, watching educational videos to keep your homeschool student engaged and learning – thanks to that it allows Android apps; the best part I love about these devices is that they’re lightweight and portable, so you can easily take them with you on the go.
Rather than depending on a Windows operating system, Chromebooks utilize the Linux-based Google Chrome as its operating system.
I’ve been using Chromebooks for 4 years now
I got my first Chromebook in 2019 as I needed a lightweight, portable device to take with me on the go. At the time, I was working as a freelance writer and needed something to help me get my work done quickly and easily. I was amazed at how easy it was to use a Chromebook for online tasks – everything from checking email to writing articles. I do a lot of writing and love that Google Docs saves things automatically as I write.
Fast-forward to today and I’m still using Chromebooks for work, like editing documents or creating documents, and I’ve also started using them for homeschooling my kids. It’s perfect for your homeschool student because of lightweight, portable, and, most importantly – secure. With the number of educational games and apps available for Chromebooks, my kids have been able to excel in their studies. Plus, with the long battery life, they can use them all day without worrying about running out of power.
I have experienced several Chromebook devices, but so far, my best Chromebook for homeschooling is Lenovo DUET; it’s lightweight and sleek in design, has an FHD screen, 4 GB RAM, and especially a detachable keyboard. I bet it’s worth your bucks (just costs under $220).

KEIRA’s TAKE:
I know most of you are looking for the Chromebook option to go cheap. Maybe because your little homeschooler is still pretty unassuming and immature (as they should be), but that doesn’t mean you have to get them some dinky little computer that’s going to fall apart the second they accidentally drop it. What should I look at when buying a Chromebook for homeschoolers?
Chromebooks are becoming increasingly popular, but with so many different models on the market, it can be hard to know which one is right for you.
Not all Chromebooks are created equal. Some have better features than others, and some are built for specific purposes.
You should keep a few things in mind that I’m listing down below:
The best advice when buying a Chromebook: Start with Why
First, consider what you’ll be using your Chromebook for. If you’re a heavy Google user, then any Chromebook will likely suffice. However, if you want to use your Chromebook for more than just web browsing, email, or using google docs, you’ll need to ensure it has the features you need.
For web browsing and online courses, any Chromebook from the top brands can do the trick, but if you want to run multiple programs, smooth functions, and playing games also; I would recommend going for a more powerful Chromebook with a good processor, 8 GB of RAM (minimum), some basic graphics processing capability and a Full HD IPS display.
Processor
The processor is one of the most important things to look at when buying a Chromebook. The processor powers the Chromebook and allows it to run all of its programs.
A good processor will make your Chromebook faster and more responsive. It can also help extend the battery life.
You’ll find a wide range of processors in Chromebooks, but the two most common are the Intel Celeron and the Intel Core.
The Celeron is the cheaper of the two, but it’s also not as powerful. It’s a good choice for basic tasks like web browsing and email, but it won’t be able to handle more demanding tasks.
The Core is more expensive, but it’s also more powerful. It can handle more demanding tasks like video streaming, gaming, and online learning. And I tried to list down those with Core/Intel Core processors.
RAM
Another important thing to look at is the RAM. The RAM allows the Chromebook to store information and keep track of what you’re doing.
A good amount of RAM will allow the Chromebook to run more programs simultaneously and make switching between them faster. It can also help extend the battery life.
You’ll find Chromebooks with anywhere from 2 GB to 8 GB of RAM. I would recommend going for at least 4 GB, but if you can afford it, go for 8 GB.
Storage
Chromebooks come with two types of storage: local storage and cloud storage. Local storage is the storage that’s on the Chromebook itself. It stores things like your files, pictures, and videos.
Cloud storage is storage that’s on the internet. It stores things like your email, bookmarks, and settings.
Chromebooks come with different amounts of local storage, but they all come with at least 100 GB of cloud storage.
I recommend getting a Chromebook with at least 32 GB of local storage. This will give you enough space to store your files and pictures.
You can always get an external hard drive or use cloud storage to store more than that.
Display
The display is the part of the Chromebook that you look at. It’s important to consider the size, resolution, and type of display when buying a Chromebook. Consider going with an FHD display.
Size
Chromebooks come in a variety of different sizes. The most common are 11 inches, 13 inches, and 14 inches.
The display size is important to consider because it will affect how portable the Chromebook is.
If you want a Chromebook that you can easily carry around, go for an 11-inch model. If you don’t mind carrying a little extra weight, go for a 13- or 14-inch model.
Battery life
One of the best things about Chromebooks is their battery life. They’re designed to be used on the go, so they have to have long-lasting battery life.
When buying a Chromebook, you should look for one with at least 10 hours of battery life. This will give you enough time to use it for a full day without worrying about recharging it. however, If you are watching movies and surfing the internet, battery usage will be longer than if you are playing video games, editing videos, or running multiple programs at once.
What is a Chromebook vs. a laptop?
Chromebooks are designed primarily for online use, whereas laptops can be used for online and offline activities.
Another major difference between Chromebooks and laptops is that Chromebooks typically have less storage capacity, as most of their functionality is intended to rely on cloud-based applications and services. Additionally, Chromebooks tend to be cheaper than laptops.
So what’s the bottom line? If you’re looking for a device that you can use for both schoolwork and entertainment purposes, then a homeschool laptop would be the best option. However, a Chromebook would be a better choice if you’re mainly interested in using your computer for online activities and don’t need much storage space.
? Check My recommendations on Homeschooling Laptops as well.
Are Chromebooks worth it for students?
That’s a question that’s been asked a lot lately, as more and more people are switching to Google’s cloud-based operating system. So what’s the verdict? Are Chromebooks good enough for student use, or are they just a cheap alternative to laptops?
Well, the answer to that question depends on who you ask. Some say that Chromebooks are perfect for students because they’re lightweight, easy to use, and don’t require any software installation or updates. Additionally, most of the work that students do nowadays is online anyway, so having a Chromebook would be just as good as having a laptop.
However, other people say that Chromebooks aren’t ideal for student use because they have limited storage capacity and can only be used when connected to the internet. Plus, some applications and programs can only be used on a laptop or desktop computer. So, in the end, it comes down to your needs and student type.
The cut-to-chase answer to “Are Chromebooks worth it for students?” is…
Most of the time, yes. They’re lightweight, portable, and have great battery life. They’re also relatively inexpensive compared to laptops with similar specs.
However, there are some instances where a homeschool laptop would be a better choice, such as if you need to use specific software for your classes or if you want to be able to work offline. Overall, Chromebooks are a great option for students who want an affordable and lightweight device that can handle all their work and assignments. They can easily handle office suite applications like Microsoft Office or Google Docs, and can even run some of the more resource-heavy games as long as the graphics settings are lowered appropriately.
What are the main disadvantages of a Chromebook?
- It can be limited to software and app support.
- May not be able to connect to certain printers or networks.
- Some people find the keyboard and trackpad less than ideal.
- Best for low-intensive tasks such as web browsing and entertainment
How much should I pay for a good Chromebook?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the price of a Chromebook will vary depending on your specific needs. However, I suggest you budget between $200 and $350 for a quality Chromebook that will meet most homeschoolers’ needs. For instance, Lenovo DUET Chromebook costs around $250 and has all the essential features for homeschoolers. But if you want to go premium, the price can be as high as $500 (like Acer Spin 713 & Google Pixel M3 are around $500), which I think is not a good idea to purchase on such a high budget (despite the fact you’re an avid fan of google chrome OS – like me).
Our Chromebook doesn’t come with additional equipment, so we added an external monitor, speakers, a Webcam, a microphone, and a keyboard/mouse, all for around $100.
That said, keep your budget around $200-300, and you’ll find the right spot.

It’s your turn!
The best Chromebook for homeschooling can be a great choice for those looking for an affordable and lightweight device that can handle all of their work and assignments. While there are some instances where a laptop would be a better choice, external speakers, Webcam, USB ports, and long battery life make Chromebooks a good option for homeschool families.
I tried to review the best you can purchase with a minimum budget, from buyers’ guides to different related FAQs; I tried to cover that all. Still, comments are welcome underneath if I missed something or if you’ve any doubts.
My Best Pick So Far
- I am a big fan of Chromebooks and an avid user who always loves to update her device. I have experienced several Chromebook devices, but so far Lenovo DUET is the best I ever purchased. You get an FHD screen, a fast processor, and a detachable keyboard. Furthermore, it comes with a pretty awesome design and slim shape, and also it’s lightweight to carry anywhere.
Frequent Asked Questions
Is a Chromebook good for homeschooling?
Chromebooks allow homeschoolers to save time. Since all OS upgrades are cloud-based, there is only a quick restart when updates are necessary. When students are ready to start working, there is less downtime because these gadgets don’t take as long to start up as other similar devices.
Is Chromebook useless without internet access?
Your Chromebook has a lot of features that you may use even without Internet access. Notably, not all offline programs and services can be used in guest or incognito mode. To modify your Gmail offline settings if you use it with your work or school account, ask your administrator for assistance.
